The home or office computer is a very important device that lets us surf the internet, play games, email our friends and family and is used by business to perform important daily tasks. In short, the modern PC is a device that we simply cannot be without but what happens when our computer grinds to a halt and is rendered useless?
While the computer experts will tell us that modern computers hardly ever go wrong the simple truth is that Windows eventually slows down with all the games, software applications and files that are downloaded from a variety of sources.
Even photos and movies can seriously slow down even the most expensive and powerful computer. Thankfully there are some basic tips that you can follow in order to avoid a costly visit to computer repair shop.
Step One
Find out where you're PC is slowing down. Is the machine slow to boot up from a cold start up or does it slow down after a few hours of surfing the internet or games playing. Slow boot ups can often mean a hardware failure or out of date device drivers.
Step Two
Do software applications hang or cause your computer to freeze after starting up? This problem is very common in Windows XP and vista where programs are often too powerful for the PC. Try uninstalling the software via the control panel to see if this helps.
Step Three
Is your hard drive full to capacity? This is like running your car without fuel. A full hard disk can seriously affect PC performance in all sorts of ways. A good tip to free up disk space to uninstall any games/software that you no longer use. Always to try to keep at least 200MB space free, if you find that you need more hard drive memory then consider upgrading your hard drive.
Step Four
Use a good software program to analyze your PC for errors. You can download many tools on the internet that will scan your PC for system errors and corrupted files. These files can cause the dreaded freeze and system lock ups that frustrate many computer users.
